How we checked which Bora Bora resorts are open in 2026
Each status above was checked in October 2026 against current booking listings, hotel and brand announcements (IHG, Marriott and Hilton), hotel trade news and local reporting from French Polynesia. When sources disagreed, we went with the most recent official or local source.
We don't rely on online travel agencies or tourism directories alone. Their listings can lag months behind reality. In October 2026, for example, the official Tahiti Tourisme directory still listed the InterContinental Thalasso as open year-round, even though the resort had closed on 1 June 2026.

Sofitel Bora Bora Private Island: closed
The Sofitel Bora Bora Private Island stood on Motu Piti Uu Uta, a small islet in the lagoon. Some travel agencies only marked it "ceased operations" in early 2025, but local reporting tells a longer story. Radio1 Tahiti reported that the Private Island closed in March 2020, at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and never reopened. Both Bora Bora Sofitels went into receivership in 2022, and the commercial court ordered their liquidation in October 2023 after the takeover offers fell through.
In June 2025, Radio1 reported that the Bangkok-based Dusit Thani group was interested in investing on Bora Bora, but no buyer for either property has been confirmed. There is no reopening date, so ignore any listing that still offers rooms here.
Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort: closed
The Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort was the main-island sister of the Private Island resort, near Matira Point. It closed in 2019 for renovation work and never reopened. It then followed the same path as its sister: receivership in 2022 and liquidation in October 2023. Before that ruling, the commercial court had awarded both hotels to the Royal group in April 2023, but the Court of Appeal overturned that decision a few months later. Local reports describe the buildings as badly deteriorated. It is not taking bookings, and no reopening has been announced.
Tips for checking a Bora Bora resort is open before you book
- Book on the official site, or check it first. If the resort's own booking engine shows no availability for your dates, be wary of a third-party site that does.
- Search the resort name plus "renovation" or "closure." Bora Bora resorts often close for months at a time for upgrades, as the Conrad did in 2026.
- Get written confirmation of your dates and room type, and ask whether any restaurants, pools or the spa will be closed for works during your stay.
- Book refundable rates if you're travelling near a planned reopening date, since dates can slip.
- Confirm the boat transfer. Motu resorts usually charge for it (often about $100–300 per person return), so add it to your budget.
