Maitai Polynesia Bora Bora rooms and overwater bungalows

Hotel Maitai Polynesia has 74 rooms, which makes it bigger than it looks from the road. The rooms fall into three groups, and they differ a lot in price:

  • Garden View and Ocean View rooms (about 27 m², or 290 sq ft): hotel-style rooms set up the hillside behind the beach. Rooms on the upper levels look out over the lagoon. Triple versions sleep 3 adults or 2 adults and a child.
  • Beach Bungalows (about 30 m², or 322 sq ft): air-conditioned, with steps straight onto the sand.
  • Overwater Bungalows (about 30 m², or 322 sq ft): 18 in total, spread across three pontoons. They come as standard Overwater, End of Pontoon (the most private) and Premium Overwater with a larger veranda.

As a guide, garden rooms run from about €300 a night and overwater bungalows from about €800 a night (October 2026). That makes Maitai one of the cheapest ways to sleep over the water on Bora Bora. The bungalows are simpler and smaller than the luxury motu villas, with no private plunge pools.

Restaurants at Hotel Maitai Bora Bora

The hotel has two restaurants and a few bars:

  • Haere Mai: the garden restaurant, serving French and Polynesian food at breakfast and dinner, with live entertainment one night a week.
  • Tama'a Maitai: the lagoon-edge restaurant, built with traditional Polynesian materials, serving à la carte lunch and dinner.
  • Manuia Bar in the garden for evening cocktails, plus a daytime beach bar.

Because the hotel is on the main island, you aren't tied to its restaurants. Fare Manuia and Snack Matira (lunch only) are both near Matira, and the Vaitape roulottes (food trucks) are a short drive north. Our Bora Bora dining guide has more ideas.

Location: a short walk from Matira Beach

Maitai sits on the west-facing shore of the main island, about a 10–12 minute walk from Matira Beach, the island's only public beach. The beach bungalows look across the lagoon toward Raiatea and Taha'a, so sunsets are a nightly event. Vaitape, the main village with its shops, bank and ferry dock, is a few minutes' drive north.

Getting there is simple. Take the airline's free shuttle boat from the airport to Vaitape dock (about 15 minutes), then go by road to the hotel. The hotel can arrange that leg for a fee, or you can take a taxi. Bicycles and scooters can be rented at the hotel, which makes it easy to explore the coast road.

Who runs Maitai, and who it suits

Maitai belongs to Pacific Beachcomber, the group that owns the InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana and the former InterContinental Thalasso, which is now becoming the Regent Bora Bora. Maitai is the group's relaxed 3-star option, a step below the 4-star Le Moana nearby.

It suits travelers who want an overwater bungalow without luxury-resort prices, and who would rather walk to a beach and local restaurants than be on a private motu. Kayaks, paddleboards, outrigger canoes and snorkeling are available, and the activities desk books lagoon tours, diving and 4x4 trips. More questions

Does Hotel Maitai Bora Bora have overwater bungalows?

Yes. It has 18 overwater bungalows on three pontoons, including End of Pontoon and Premium units.

Do I need a boat to reach Maitai Polynesia?

Only the free airport shuttle boat to Vaitape. After that, the hotel is reached by road, so there is no motu transfer fee.

How far ahead should I book Maitai's overwater bungalows?

With only 18 overwater bungalows, these are usually the first rooms to sell out, especially in the June–September high season (busiest in July and August). For those months, book as early as you can. If your dates are flexible, the shoulder months of May and October are less crowded and still mostly dry.
