Bora Bora vs Maldives: flight times from the US

For American travelers, getting there is the clearest difference. Bora Bora is the shorter trip from the West Coast. Air Tahiti Nui and Air France fly nonstop from Los Angeles to Papeete in about 7.5–8.5 hours, and United and French Bee fly nonstop from San Francisco in about 8.5 hours. From Papeete it is a 50-minute flight to Bora Bora, then a boat to your hotel.

There are no nonstop flights from the US to the Maldives. Most travelers connect through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or another hub to Malé, and total travel time is usually about 20–30 hours. From Malé, nearby resorts send a speedboat, while those farther out are reached by seaplane or a domestic flight. See our Bora Bora flight guide for US routes.

Jet lag differs too. Bora Bora keeps Hawaii time (UTC−10), two to three hours behind California. The Maldives is UTC+5, 9 to 13 hours ahead of the continental US.

Maldives vs Bora Bora: how many overwater resorts?

The Maldives is far bigger as a resort destination. At the end of 2024 it had 173 operating resorts, each usually on its own island, plus 920 guesthouses on inhabited local islands. Bora Bora has seven open resorts with overwater rooms as of October 2026: the Four Seasons, St. Regis, Conrad, Westin, InterContinental Le Moana, Le Bora Bora by Pearl and Maitai Polynesia.

The idea itself started in French Polynesia: the first overwater bungalows were built on nearby Raiatea in 1967, while the Maldives opened its first resort in 1972.

Landscape: a volcanic island vs coral atolls

Bora Bora is the remnant of an extinct volcano. Mount Otemanu (727 m) rises from the middle of a 78 km² lagoon ringed by sandy motus, and that mountain view is what most visitors come to photograph. The Maldives is 26 atolls of low coral islands spread across about 90,000 km² of sea, and its highest natural point is only about 2.4 m above sea level. You get an endless horizon and, often, a resort with an island to itself, but no mountains.

Bora Bora or Maldives: the best seasons are opposite

Bora Bora's driest months are May to October, with high season from June to September. In the Maldives, the southwest monsoon brings more rain from May to October, and the northeast monsoon from November to April is generally sunny. If your dates are fixed, that can decide it: a July trip favors Bora Bora, and a February trip favors the Maldives. See the best time to visit Bora Bora for month-by-month detail.

On price, both run from mid-range to ultra-luxury. In Bora Bora, resort rooms start from about $700 a night at InterContinental Le Moana, and overwater villas reach about $4,000 at the St. Regis (Oct 2026). The Maldives has more choice at every level, including budget guesthouses on local islands. Compare quotes for the same room type, meal plan and transfers, which can add a lot in either destination.
