Is the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa open? (October 2026)

No. The InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa closed on 1 June 2026 for extensive renovations. On 16 September 2026, IHG Hotels & Resorts and the resort's owner, Pacific Beachcomber, announced that it will reopen in late 2027 as the Regent Bora Bora. No exact reopening date has been given, and the announcement included no booking details.

Some third-party listings, including tourism directories and older package pages, may still show the resort as bookable for 2026 and 2027 dates. Treat those with caution. If you're offered a room here, confirm directly with IHG before paying anything, and check our Bora Bora resort status page for the latest.

Regent Bora Bora: what we know so far

The resort opened in 2006 on Motu Piti Aau, a motu on the eastern edge of the lagoon with views back toward Mount Otemanu. It began with 80 overwater villas. Here's what IHG has confirmed about the Regent conversion:

  • 84 villas, all overwater. IHG describes the Regent Bora Bora as "an exclusively overwater experience."
  • The seawater air-conditioning stays. The resort was the first hotel in the world to cool its rooms with cold water pumped from deep in the Pacific. IHG says the system has cut electricity use for air-conditioning and refrigeration by around 90%, and it will keep running under the Regent name.
  • Regent service touches. The brand plans "Personal Havens" (private retreat spaces), "Regent Experience Agents" who act as one point of contact from before arrival to departure, and "With Compliments" guest inclusions.
  • A first for French Polynesia. It will be Regent's first hotel in the region, joining Regent properties in places such as Hong Kong, Santa Monica, Phu Quoc, Cannes, Shanghai and Bali.

Still not announced: the exact opening date, room rates, restaurant concepts, and whether the Deep Ocean Spa will continue in its current form. We'll update this page as IHG releases details.

What made the InterContinental Thalasso famous

When it opened, the resort was built around two ideas. The first was the Deep Ocean Spa, designed and run with the French marine-cosmetics company Algotherm. It used mineral-rich seawater pumped from the deep Pacific and was billed as French Polynesia's first thalasso spa. The second was the seawater air-conditioning, which cut the resort's energy use sharply. Tahiti Tourisme calls Motu Piti Aau the "islet of two hearts." Guests also knew it for its overwater villas and its clear views of Mount Otemanu across the lagoon.
