Village Temanuata bungalows: what to expect

Village Temanuata is a small, family-run hotel on the lagoon at Matira Point. Tahiti Tourisme lists it in its guesthouse category, with eleven Polynesian-style bungalows and room for about 30 guests. That makes it far more personal than a resort. There are four bungalow types: beach, sea-view, garden and family. The family bungalows sleep up to five.

The rooms are simple, with rattan walls and basic furniture. They're cooled by ceiling fans, with no air-conditioning or TV. Booking sites list a fridge, microwave, kettle and basic cookware in the rooms, which helps keep food costs down. Wi-Fi is free. The property has its own small beach and a garden, and bicycles and kayaks are available to rent.

Reviewers describe the bungalows as dated and fairly close together, so noise can carry. Only a few have a true sea view. If a view matters, book a beach or sea-view bungalow rather than a garden one.

Budget hotels in Bora Bora: how Temanuata compares

At about $180–350 a night, Village Temanuata is one of the least expensive places to stay near Matira Beach. Here is how it compares with the other budget and mid-range options we cover (October 2026):

PlaceTypical priceBest for
Bora Bora Ecolodge$150–300/nightSelf-catering, quiet east side
Village Temanuata$180–350/nightWalking to Matira, families on a budget
Maitai PolynesiaFrom ~€300 (garden), ~€800 (overwater)Budget overwater bungalows
InterContinental Le MoanaFrom ~$700/nightA full-service resort on Matira Point

What you give up at this price is resort service: there is no spa, no gym and no overwater room. What you gain is money left over for lagoon tours and meals out. See Is Bora Bora expensive? for a fuller budget.

Eating near Village Temanuata

Breakfast (continental) is offered for an extra charge. For other meals you have plenty of choice nearby, which is a big plus of staying at Matira rather than on a motu:

  • Bora Bora Beach Club, a few minutes' walk away.
  • Snack Matira on Matira Beach, for lunch only (about 10am–4pm).
  • Fare Manuia near Matira, for pizza and seafood.
  • The roulottes (food trucks) and supermarkets in Vaitape, if you're stocking your kitchenette.

Getting to Village Temanuata from the airport

Bora Bora's airport is on its own motu. Take the airline's free shuttle boat to Vaitape dock (about 15 minutes), then drive about 9 km south along the coast road to Matira. The hotel offers a round-trip transfer on request for a fee, or you can take a taxi. Taxis on Bora Bora are expensive, so ask the price before you set off. Our airport transfer guide covers the options.

Check-in usually runs from 11am to 6pm, and late arrivals may pay an extra fee, so tell the hotel your flight time in advance. Check-out is usually by 10am. Once you're settled, Matira Beach is within walking distance for swimming and sunsets.

Things to do from Matira Point

Staying at Matira puts the island's best free activity on your doorstep. Matira Beach is Bora Bora's only public beach, about 2 km of soft sand with shallow, calm water that suits children and beginners. It is also the island's classic sunset spot. Facilities are minimal, so bring water and shade.

Use the hotel's kayaks to paddle the shallows off the point. A half-day lagoon tour and snorkel safari is easy to arrange. Ask whether pickup from Matira is included. In late 2025, a strictly protected reserve, Popora Rāhui, was created on the southern reef off Matira. Ask locally about where you can swim and snorkel, and remember that feeding fish, rays or sharks is illegal in French Polynesia.

More questions

Is Village Temanuata good for families?

For families on a budget, yes. The family bungalows sleep up to five and have basic kitchen equipment, and the calm, shallow water at Matira Beach suits young swimmers. Just don't expect a kids' club, a big pool or resort-style entertainment.
