The short answer: The places most like Bora Bora are its neighbors in French Polynesia: Moorea, Taha'a and the Tuamotu atolls of Rangiroa, Tikehau and Fakarava, all on the same Air Tahiti network. Further afield, Fiji and the Maldives are the main rivals for overwater bungalows, Aitutaki in the Cook Islands has a similar lagoon, and Mexico's Riviera Maya is the closest overwater option to the US. Bali and the Seychelles are beautiful, but they are different kinds of trips.

  • Cheaper: Moorea, Maldives guesthouses, Bali.
  • Closer to the US: the Riviera Maya (about 5 hours nonstop from LAX) and Sandals' overwater villas in the Caribbean.
  • Where Bora Bora wins: nowhere else has an overwater bungalow facing a volcanic peak like Mount Otemanu across a lagoon.

Islands like Bora Bora in French Polynesia

If you love the idea of Bora Bora but not the price, start next door. You fly the same LAX to Tahiti route, and Air Tahiti's multi-island passes combine islands, including direct hops from Bora Bora to the Tuamotus. Our island-hopping guide covers the practical side.

Moorea

Moorea is the easiest swap: a 15-minute flight or 30 to 45 minute ferry from Papeete, with jagged green peaks and good hiking. A few of its resorts have overwater bungalows, the best known being the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort, and rates usually undercut Bora Bora's motu resorts. Check that a resort is open for your dates, since several Moorea hotels have closed or renovated in recent years. See Bora Bora vs Moorea and, for the gateway island, Bora Bora vs Tahiti.

Taha'a, Huahine and Maupiti

  • Taha'a, the "vanilla island", shares a lagoon with Raiatea. It has no airport, so you fly to Raiatea and cross by boat. Its best-known overwater bungalows are at Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts, on a motu off the main island.
  • Huahine is green, quiet and rich in marae (stone temple sites). Its only overwater hotel has closed, so come for guesthouses and slow days.
  • Maupiti looks like a small Bora Bora, with a lagoon around a central peak, but it has no big resorts at all. You stay in family-run guesthouses (pensions). Air Tahiti flies there, and the Apetahi Express ferry continues from Bora Bora.

Rangiroa, Tikehau and Fakarava (the Tuamotus)

The Tuamotus are flat coral atolls with no mountains, but they offer the best diving in French Polynesia. Rangiroa is known for drift dives through its passes and has overwater bungalows at the Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa (ask whether any renovation work is planned for your dates). Tikehau has pink-sand beaches and overwater bungalows at Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts. Fakarava is part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and its southern pass, Tumakohua, is famous for gray reef sharks that can number in the hundreds. Stays there are mostly guesthouses.

Fiji vs Bora Bora

Fiji Airways flies nonstop to Nadi from Los Angeles and San Francisco (about 11 hours from LAX), one long flight with no domestic hop.

Fiji has far more mid-range resorts, a strong family culture (kids' clubs are common, and Australian and New Zealand families fill resorts in school holidays), and excellent diving. Its nickname is the "soft coral capital of the world", thanks to the Somosomo Strait between Vanua Levu and Taveuni, home of the Rainbow Reef. Overwater bungalows are rarer than you might expect. Likuliku Lagoon Resort in the Mamanuca Islands, which is adults only, and the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay on Viti Levu are the best-known options.

What Fiji lacks is Bora Bora's look: no single peak rising out of a ring of motu. Both have the same seasons: drier May to October, with a wet and cyclone season from November to April. Pick Fiji for families, value and diving. Pick Bora Bora for the classic honeymoon view.

Maldives vs Bora Bora vs Fiji

The Maldives has more overwater villas than anywhere else, and a far wider price range. Since local islands opened to tourists in 2009, guesthouses there have become a real budget option, often around $80 to $140 a night with breakfast (2026). Local islands are dry, and swimwear is for designated bikini beaches. At the other end are ultra-luxury private-island resorts reached by seaplane.

The catch is distance: there are no nonstop flights from the US. Expect 20 to 30 hours with a connection in Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or Singapore. The weather also runs on a different calendar: driest from December to April and wetter from May to November, roughly the opposite of Bora Bora and Fiji.

The Maldives wins on overwater variety and price range, Fiji on easy flights and families, Bora Bora on scenery. Our Bora Bora vs Maldives page goes factor by factor.

Bora Bora vs Bali and Seychelles vs Bora Bora

Bora Bora vs Bali

Both are honeymoon favorites, but they're very different trips. Bali has temples, rice terraces, great food and private pool villas at every budget, usually for far less. It has no overwater bungalows over the ocean; its "water villas" sit over pools and man-made lagoons. There's no US nonstop: Singapore Airlines, for example, connects from LAX via Singapore in about 20 hours. The dry season runs from April to October. Foreign visitors pay a one-time IDR 150,000 tourist levy, payable online via the official Love Bali system. Choose Bali for culture and value, and Bora Bora for the lagoon.

Seychelles vs Bora Bora

The Seychelles is famous for granite boulder beaches, giant tortoises and a nature-first feel. There are no true overwater bungalows; you stay in beach villas. Getting there takes 22 to 26 hours from the West Coast via a Gulf or African hub. The calmest months fall between the trade-wind seasons, in April to May and October to November. Go for beaches and hiking, not stilts.

Aitutaki, Cook Islands: the lookalike lagoon

Aitutaki is a small island with low hills and a huge motu-dotted lagoon, the closest look to Bora Bora outside French Polynesia, minus the mountain. Air Rarotonga flies there from Rarotonga in about 50 minutes, several times a day. The only overwater bungalows in the Cook Islands are seven at the adults-only (16+) Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort.

There's no nonstop from mainland America. You either connect through Papeete with Air Tahiti Nui, which makes a Tahiti-plus-Cooks trip easy, or take the weekly flight from Honolulu. Aitutaki's driest months are roughly June to October.

Overwater bungalows closer to the US

If flight time is the deal-breaker, these have real overwater rooms about five hours from a US hub.

  • Riviera Maya, Mexico: Palafitos at El Dorado Maroma, by Karisma, has 30 adults-only, all-inclusive overwater bungalows on Maroma Beach, about 35 to 45 minutes from Cancun airport. Delta and United fly LAX to Cancun nonstop in about 5 hours.
  • Sandals Grande St. Lucian (Saint Lucia): overwater bungalows on an adults-only, all-inclusive couples' resort. Saint Lucia has nonstops from New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta and other hubs.
  • Sandals Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: opened in 2024 with two-story overwater villas. Saint Vincent has nonstops from Miami, plus some seasonal flights from other US hubs.
Jamaica's overwater rooms are closed right now. After Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, Sandals South Coast is scheduled to reopen on 18 November 2026 and Sandals Royal Caribbean, renamed Sandals Caribbean Cay, on 18 December 2026. Confirm before you book, and remember hurricane season runs June to November.

These suit a long weekend or a first overwater stay, but there's no enclosed lagoon or mountain backdrop.

Where Bora Bora still wins

Bora Bora's signature is Mount Otemanu, a 727-meter volcanic peak rising out of a lagoon ringed by motu, and many overwater bungalows face it directly. The Maldives and Tuamotus are flat, and Fiji, Aitutaki and Mexico don't put a peak like that across the water from your deck. From LAX, Bora Bora is also closer than most people think: about 8 hours nonstop to Tahiti and a 50-minute hop (see our LAX to Bora Bora flight guide).

It doesn't have to cost the top rates either. Overwater rooms at the Maitai Polynesia start from about €800 a night (2026), and the InterContinental Le Moana sits right by Matira, the island's public beach (see our Bora Bora beaches guide). Our guides to choosing an overwater bungalow and what Bora Bora really costs can help you decide whether a lower-cost stay, or a split with Moorea or an atoll, gets you the view for less.

Frequently asked questions

What is the closest place to Bora Bora that looks like it?

Its neighbors in French Polynesia. Moorea, Taha'a and Maupiti have similar lagoons and peaks, and Maupiti looks most like a small Bora Bora. Outside French Polynesia, Aitutaki in the Cook Islands has the most similar lagoon.

Is Fiji cheaper than Bora Bora?

Usually, yes. Fiji has many more mid-range resorts and a nonstop flight of about 11 hours from Los Angeles. Overwater bungalows there are limited, though, and luxury Fiji resorts can cost as much as Bora Bora.

Is the Maldives or Bora Bora better?

The Maldives has more overwater villas, excellent diving and budget guesthouses, but no nonstop flights from the US. Bora Bora is easier to reach from the West Coast and has Mount Otemanu's mountain-and-lagoon view.

Does Bali have overwater bungalows like Bora Bora?

Not over the sea. Bali's "water villas" sit over pools or man-made lagoons. It's better for culture, food and private pool villas at lower prices.

Where can I stay in an overwater bungalow closer to the US?

Palafitos at El Dorado Maroma on Mexico's Riviera Maya, about 5 hours nonstop from LAX to Cancun, and Sandals resorts in Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent. Sandals' two Jamaican overwater resorts are scheduled to reopen in late 2026.

Can I combine Bora Bora with another island?

Yes. Air Tahiti's multi-island passes combine Bora Bora with Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea (for Taha'a), Maupiti and the Tuamotu atolls of Rangiroa, Tikehau and Fakarava.
