Check current ratesHow long is the flight from LAX to Bora Bora?
The nonstop from Los Angeles to Papeete covers about 4,130 miles (6,650 km) and is scheduled at roughly 8 hours 10 minutes to 8 hours 25 minutes. Coming home, Papeete to LAX is a little quicker, at about 7¾ to 8 hours. Add the 50-minute Air Tahiti or Air Moana flight to Bora Bora and the boat across the lagoon, and with a two-hour connection in Papeete you should plan on 11 hours or more from takeoff at LAX to stepping onto your resort dock.
Jet lag is mild. Tahiti keeps the same time as Hawaii all year (UTC−10, no daylight saving), so it is 3 hours behind Los Angeles in summer and 2 hours behind in winter.
Flights from Los Angeles to Bora Bora: the two nonstop airlines
- Air Tahiti Nui flies Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with three cabins: Poerava Business, Moana Premium (premium economy) and Moana Economy. In the autumn 2026 timetable it runs about 11 flights a week between LAX and Papeete.
- Air France flies the route on its Paris–Los Angeles–Papeete service with Airbus A350-900s (business, premium economy and economy), about 6 flights a week in the same period.
Both airlines leave from the Tom Bradley International Terminal (Terminal B) at LAX. Delta ended its LAX–Papeete service in June 2025, so these are now the only nonstop options from Los Angeles. Departure times vary by day of the week, from mid-afternoon to late evening, so check whether your flight lands in Papeete late at night or early in the morning before you book the island hop.
Booking LAX to Bora Bora on one ticket
Since June 2026, Air Tahiti Nui and Air Tahiti have shared a codeshare agreement, so you can book Los Angeles to Bora Bora (BOB) as a single reservation on Air Tahiti Nui, with Air Tahiti operating the final leg on an ATR 72 turboprop. One ticket keeps both flights together if the first one runs late.
The island leg follows Air Tahiti's baggage rules, not your long-haul allowance: standard fares include one checked bag up to 23 kg (50 lb), and cabin bags are limited to 5 kg because the turboprop's overhead bins are small. Pack a light personal bag for the last hour.
If you fly Air France, or book the island hop separately, you collect your bags in Papeete and check them in again at the domestic counters in a separate part of the same airport. Allow at least two hours. If your LAX flight lands in the evening, it is usually simpler to spend the night near Faa'a airport and fly to Bora Bora the next morning.
Flying home: Bora Bora to LAX
Air Tahiti Nui's Papeete–Los Angeles flight leaves late in the evening (around 10:30 pm in the October 2026 schedule) and lands at LAX the next morning. That means you can usually fly from Bora Bora to Papeete on the same day. A morning or early-afternoon island flight leaves you a comfortable buffer. Remember that the airline shuttle boat leaves Vaitape 1 hour 30 minutes before each Air Tahiti departure. Resort guests are taken to the airport by the resort's boat. See our Bora Bora airport guide for the details, and the Papeete to Bora Bora page for the island hop itself.
