How long is the flight from SFO to Bora Bora?

San Francisco to Papeete is about 4,230 miles (6,800 km), and nonstops are scheduled at roughly 8 hours 20 minutes to 8 hours 45 minutes. After that comes the 50-minute hop to Bora Bora and a boat across the lagoon. If you connect on the same day, plan on 11 hours or more from SFO to your resort dock. If you spend a night in Papeete, it becomes a two-day trip.

Tahiti keeps Hawaii time all year (UTC−10, no daylight saving), which puts it 3 hours behind San Francisco in summer and 2 hours behind in winter.

United's schedule changes by season. In 2026 it planned up to daily flights from late June to late October, with fewer flights a week in winter. French Bee is a low-cost airline on its Paris (Orly)–San Francisco–Papeete route, so you pay extra for seats, meals and bags on the cheapest fare. Compare the total price, not just the base fare.

Connecting to Bora Bora after landing in Papeete

Your arrival time decides your plan. In the late-2026 timetable, United lands in Papeete in the evening, and the last flights to Bora Bora leave around early evening. Most United travelers therefore spend a night near Faa'a airport and take a morning flight. French Bee usually lands before dawn, which leaves plenty of time to make a same-day connection.

Unless your ticket includes the island flight and checks your bags through, expect to collect them in Papeete and check them in again at the domestic counters, in a separate part of the same airport. Allow at least two hours. Watch the weight limits on the island leg: Air Tahiti's standard fares include 23 kg (50 lb) checked and 5 kg in the cabin. Air Moana's cheapest Light fare includes no checked bag at all. Details are on our Papeete to Bora Bora page.

Flying home from Bora Bora to San Francisco

United's return flight leaves Papeete in the evening (about 8:40–10:10 pm in recent schedules) and lands in San Francisco the next morning, so you can usually fly from Bora Bora to Papeete on the same day. French Bee's return leaves Papeete in the early morning, so you need a night on Tahiti first. When you leave Bora Bora, the airline shuttle boat departs from the Vaitape dock 1 hour 30 minutes before each Air Tahiti flight, or 1 hour 15 minutes before each Air Moana flight. See the Bora Bora airport guide for more.

More questions

Is SFO or LAX better for Bora Bora?

Both have nonstops of about 8 hours. LAX has more weekly flights (Air Tahiti Nui and Air France), and Air Tahiti Nui can sell Los Angeles to Bora Bora on one ticket. SFO suits Bay Area travelers and anyone flying United or a budget French Bee fare. See our LAX to Bora Bora guide to compare.

Can I get from San Francisco to Bora Bora in one day?

Yes, on a French Bee flight that lands early in the morning, as long as you book a Bora Bora flight a few hours later. On United's evening arrival, plan for a night in Papeete.

Do I need a visa to fly from San Francisco to Tahiti?

Not if you are a US citizen. You can stay in French Polynesia for up to 90 days without a visa, but you need a passport that is valid for the whole trip.
