The Complete Bora Bora Honeymoon Planning Guide

9 min read

Everything newlyweds need to plan the perfect Bora Bora honeymoon, from choosing the right season to building a stress-free itinerary.

Bora Bora is the honeymoon destination that lives up to every postcard. A jagged volcanic peak rises from a lagoon so vividly turquoise it looks retouched, and thatched overwater bungalows fan out over the shallows. This guide walks you through planning a honeymoon that feels effortless from the moment you land.

How many days do you need?

Most couples find that 5 to 7 nights is the sweet spot. Because getting to Bora Bora involves a long flight to Tahiti plus a short inter-island hop, anything shorter than four nights leaves you feeling rushed. If your budget allows, split your trip between a few nights in an overwater bungalow and a few in a beachfront villa for variety.

Best time to visit

The dry season, roughly May through October, brings lower humidity, calm lagoon conditions, and the best underwater visibility. The wet season (November to April) is warmer and greener, with more frequent rain, especially in December and January, and lower prices. For a honeymoon, aim for May or October to balance good weather with fewer crowds than the June–September high season.

Building your itinerary

Balance is everything. Reserve at least one full day for pure relaxation on your bungalow deck, one for a lagoon tour, and one for a romantic sunset cruise or private picnic on a motu (a small islet). Book marquee experiences before you arrive, as the best guides fill up quickly during high season.

Practical tips for couples

  • Tell your resort you are on your honeymoon — many add a small welcome touch such as bed decorations or a bottle of bubbly.
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen; it protects the coral you came to see.
  • Bring some cash in Pacific francs (XPF) for small vendors; tipping is not expected but is welcome for great service.
  • Consider travel insurance that covers weather-related delays.

With a little advance planning, your only decision on the island will be whether to snorkel before or after breakfast.

Bora Bora honeymoon budget by tier

The figures below are our estimates for a couple spending five nights on the island, built from published prices in October 2026. They exclude international flights, which vary widely by city and season. Treat them as a starting point, then price your own dates with the trip cost calculator.

TierWhere you might stayRoom, 5 nightsDomestic flights, transfers, meals, toursRough total for two
ValueMaitai Polynesia (garden rooms from about €300, overwater from about €800) or Village Temanuata$1,700–4,500$2,000–3,100$3,700–7,600
Mid-rangeInterContinental Le Moana (from about $700), Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts (from about $800) or The Westin$3,500–7,500$2,700–5,300$6,000–12,800
Top tierFour Seasons or Conrad overwater (from about $2,500), St. Regis overwater (from about $4,000)$12,500–20,000$4,800–7,800$17,000–28,000

The extras column assumes Air Tahiti or Air Moana return flights from Papeete ($300–600 per person), resort boat transfers where they apply ($100–300 per person return), and a couple of shared or private excursions. Watch the fine print on room rates: some resorts quote before taxes. InterContinental Le Moana, for example, adds a combined 16.595% government tax and service charge plus a city tax of 200 XPF per person per day.

A sample 5-night Bora Bora honeymoon plan

  1. Day 1: Arrive on a morning flight from Papeete, check in and do nothing more ambitious than a swim off your deck.
  2. Day 2: Half-day lagoon tour in the morning, then a lazy afternoon back at the resort.
  3. Day 3: A slow day: spa treatment, paddleboard or kayak from the resort, early dinner.
  4. Day 4: Half-day 4x4 tour of the main island's viewpoints and WWII sites, then a sunset catamaran cruise.
  5. Day 5: Free morning, then a celebration dinner, either a private beach dinner at your resort or a table at La Villa Mahana (dinner only, closed Sundays).
  6. Day 6: Fly back to Papeete with at least two hours before your international departure.

A sample 7-night plan: split your stay

With a week, many couples spend three nights in a beach or garden room on the main island near Matira Beach, then move to a motu resort for four nights overwater. The first half puts you within walking distance of Matira Beach, casual restaurants and the island's only public beach; the second half saves the big splurge for the end of the trip. Use the extra days for a full-day lagoon tour with a motu barbecue lunch, a bike ride around the 32 km coast road, or simply more time on your deck.

Honeymoon booking timeline

  • 9–12 months out: Pick your dates and resort, especially for June to September. Book the Papeete to Bora Bora flight at the same time as your international ticket, since peak-season domestic flights can sell out months ahead.
  • 6 months out: Check passports. The U.S. State Department says passports should be valid for six months, and tourists need a return ticket. Buy travel insurance that covers delays.
  • 2–3 months out: Reserve special dinners, private tours and spa treatments. Small restaurants such as La Villa Mahana have only a handful of tables.
  • 2–4 weeks out: Send your resort your flight numbers so it can time your boat transfer, and confirm whether that transfer is included or charged.

Most flights from the U.S. and Europe land in Papeete early in the morning, so decide early whether to connect the same day or spend a night on Tahiti first.
